I learned a new word… “Delmarva”… as in Delmarva Peninsula. I have to confess I didn’t even know the peninsula existed, let alone its name, taken from the three states that occupy its space. This day was largely consumed by riding the 200 mile length of the Delmarva Peninsula, generally on Hwy 13 but with multiple explorations to the towns off the main highway. The peninsula is a treasure. It may be covered with tourists during the season, but not right now. The area has its own identity, and the people speak their unique dialect of Southern.
The scooter developed some mechanical issues that may be as simple as a bad tank of gas…or something worse. It’s still rideable and I’ll try to sort it out over the next couple of days.
Leah and I both left her house at 9:00 a.m., her to a NYC wedding and me back to home in California. It was my earliest in the day departure on the trip so far.
I had been fretting over finding my way out of Philadelphia because my previous entries and exits to and from the city had not gone well. But this time was different, and I felt so comfortable that I stopped to take pictures of a couple of murals.
When I first noticed the mechanical problem I stopped at a Wawa store for coffee and donuts, and took them to a rest stop to eat while the engine cooled off enough to check that the spark plug was tight. It was.
The Delmarva Peninsula:
This church’s sign out by the road advises, “Pray More, Worry Less.”
Since I was located within five miles of both the Atlantic Ocean and the Chesapeake Bay I splurged at dinner. Not shown are the salad and crab soup.
The Rittenhouse Lodge was built by the Rittenhouse family in 1952, and has been operated by them ever since.
Howard said try some Sea Foam about 3 ounces with a full tank of gas. Hope that helps!
Your brother Allen Hermens mentioned Charles Kuralt in a much earlier travel post (remember the 60’s with Walter Kronkite for evening news? Kuralt was reporting on the road in the 60’s like you are today. Some famous Kuralt (d. 7/4/97) quotes:
“Thanks to the Interstate Highway System, it is now possible to travel across the country from coast to coast without seeing anything.”
“The everyday kindness of the back roads more than makes up for the acts of greed in the headlines.”
“You can find your way across this country using burger joints the way a navigator uses stars.”
So- seems you are living this legacy of “On-the-road reporting” to your fans. I get it now – you are going for it all, see as much as you can. Travel safe. Thank you.
Looks like you are having the journey of a lifetime. Stay safe Mike.
You haven’t described the issue, but the most likely culprit is the fuel pump (there is a recall) or the fuel injector (no recall, but easy and quick repair). The challenge is finding parts.
