Oct 12: Cape Charles, Virginia

This day started out optimistically, with me doing minor maintenance to the scooter thinking that might fix its mechanical problem.  Wishful thinking, although I didn’t realize that until I had paid my $13.00 toll and was on the approach to the monster 23 mile long Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, headed for Virginia Beach.  The day ended back at Rittenhouse Lodge in Port Charles.

In between hoping I had fixed the scooter and turning back on the bridge I had a pretty nice day.  After “fixing” the scooter I washed it for the first time in five weeks, worked on the blog, and re-packed my belongings.  In the afternoon I took a scooter ride to explore the “seaside” (Atlantic) side of the peninsula.  That’s where most of the pictures were taken.

If you’ve spent much time on this blog you know I like taking pictures of churches.  Today I finally figured out why.  It’s because churches are important to people and a reflection of the community.  It’s the next best thing after taking pictures of the people themselves.  This is in Cheriton, VA.

Seaside Road parallels the coast and is mostly through farmland.  Taking any of its sideroads to the east will end up at the water where there will be boat ramps, fishing villages, ruins of fishing villages, or dead ends.  You can’t get lost and I loved it all.

Of course I didn’t take a picture of the big event of the day…pulled over on the bridge approach, wringing my hands and wondering if my sputtering scooter could make it across.  I did think about taking some pictures, but didn’t.  Saving film I guess.  If you’re interested, there are pictures of the bridge that are better than I could ever take here (but without the scooter).

I looked at the bridge the other day when I was plotting your route. I actually went through the tunnel by the magic of Google. My first reaction was, if Mike doesn’t like his mummy bag, he’s not going to like this tunnel under the bay.

Some of the churches you photographed remind me of the church in Yamhill, OR.

We’re enjoying your writing and pictures. You mentioned film. Surprised that it is still available. Can’t remember last time I saw any for sale. Continued safe and smooth travels.

The film thing was just a joke. Thanks for following Rich.

Wondered how you got the film processed and uploaded so fast!

You mentioned working on the scooter, did you figure out what the problem was?

funny thing that I saw this quote the other day and thought of Mike:
