Oct 5: Milford, Connecticut to Wells, Maine

This was another day of covering territory on a mixture of freeways and secondary roads.  For some reason I didn’t pass through many towns.  All the roads seem to be down swaths cut through forests, with only “service centers” placed at strategic intervals for fuel and food.  It was pleasant enough, but not very interesting.  I only stopped a couple of times to take pictures, and even then out of a sense of duty.  May-be it’s because I was anxious to get to my Uncle Ed’s house in Maine.

My stop for lunch at an isolated cafe in very rural Rhode Island did rise to the level of cultural experience.  It was an active place filled with locals dressed in their rural New England outfits. They all seemed to know each other.  The food was made in-house.  After the waitress turned in my order of the meatloaf special to the cook she went over to the chalkboard and erased that item.  I got the last serving.  The only thing missing was a potbelly stove.  I wanted to take a picture but thought better of it.  I think they were already suspicious of me because of my scooter and riding garb.  I don’t think I’ll loose the memory.

The day did end at my Uncle Ed’s home.  I had a welcome and delicious dinner with Ed, his wife Kerri, and daughter Bria.  Afterward we sat around the table and talked until what was probably past their bedtime.  The dinner and conversation were well worth the ride to get there.

Rode in four states, Maine was the last.

The sun was setting and I hadn’t taken many pictures, so I stopped to document this nondescript scene.  It’s on Hwy 1 on the coast of Maine.

This one is for Marion.  It’s the Johnson Museum on Hwy 1.  Two years ago we were driving south along this road and stopped for an hour or so to take pictures of Bill Johnson’s collection of…old collectibles.  A year ago Mr. Johnson died, and now all of the items he had scattered around the property are gone.  This location also represents the easternmost point of my trip.

  1. Nice fall colors you’re capturing in the photos. Looks like a paucity of sunshine for your travels, probably related to time of year and northern latitudes. Hope you miss the storms and floods of the Carolinas area I have been reading about.

how did you slip an Oct 2013 photo in with this new set of photos on existing 2015 travel journey. You’re a magician! So – with this recent excursion side-trip Philadelphia to Maine now guessing you will be travelling well in vicinity of 8000+ miles total. Enjoy the ride, be safe. Thanks.

You really have to get off the highway to see CT. Any chance you’ll be coming through on your way back? If so, you’re more than welcome here.

  4. Mike the Maine coast is the only vacation area we repeat every three years or so. Ogunquit, Wells, for the most part. It takes a map to find the meandering roads that hug the coast east of route 1.
