The most memorable event of this day was a visit to the Appomattox Courthouse National Historical Park. I’ll also remember a ride on the Blue Ridge Parkway, but the stop at the National D-Day Memorial* might soon be forgotten.
I couldn’t leave without a few more pictures of the Appomattox B&B and area.
The Appomattox Courthouse NHP is run by the National Park Service, and is a well-presented depiction of the time, place and events that brought an end to our Civil War. I spent the afternoon there, but it’s interest could have captured me for days, and its impact will last my lifetime. The presentation made personal the lives of those involved in the final days of the war, from the infantrymen to the generals. My thanks to the National Park Service.
Sharing the parking lot is not nearly as intimidating as sharing the road.
The Blue Ridge Parkway is something of a Mecca for powered two-wheelers. I rode on it for about an hour. It was nice, but I didn’t want to stay on it’s full length, which would have taken me a couple of days.
*As a footnote I should add that I stopped at the National D-Day Memorial intending to spend some time there, but didn’t go in. The reason I didn’t go in was not out of lack of interest or respect for the historical event, but because this “National” memorial is not a National Park Service presentation, but a commercial enterprise looking to make money on this sacred part of history. I wasn’t interested in supporting that.
in your recent photos I’m seeing a lot of blue skies, sunny days. I’m glad you’re getting some decent weather this time of your journey – and you’re taking advantage of it. Still impressed by the difference in landscape & vegetation east coast vs. west.
Concord had some rain showers today, you may have heard about the rainfall & mudslides in Southern California. Here it is, middle of Oct, and seems like it’s finally turning to Fall season here in SF Bay Area.
Enjoy the ride and keep sending us travel notes & photos. You’re doing a great job and I suspect your fan club is growing.
I am back to enjoying your progress, Mike, see PM. So much history there. Photos are awesome. A lot of old deteriorating buildings that no one wants to raze, or maintain, either, Strange. But so many old, and well-maintained picturesque places like your B&B. I am amazed at the mileage you’ve covered, only explanation is the many side trips and exploration. I hope you keep that modus operandi going as you return and not let get-home-itis rush you.
