September 11: Hailey, Idaho to Craters of the Moon NM

Today was all about mountains.  The ride was a big loop that started in the Sun Valley area, followed Hwy 75 north and east to Challis, then south on Hwy 93 to the town of Arco and ending at Craters of the Moon National Monument just in time to miss sunset.  There were the Sawtooth Mountain Range west of Hwy 75, the Lost River Range east of Hwy 93, and the Boulder and Pioneer Mountains in between, all big and rugged.

This place was built for scooters.  Smooth, gently curving roads lenient enough to allow some rubbernecking at the views.  There were lots of stops and a few side-road excursions.  I didn’t get tired of the sights.  As usual, it’s frustrating trying to capture grand scenes in a photo frame.  Sorry for the repetitive nature of the photos, but each has meaning to me, and it’s my show.

  1. Mike, a real treat to see such great photos of your adventure trip, please keep the story and photos coming our way! Looks like you and the scooter are holding up well. Good prep to credit for that.
I made it home Sun. 9-13, had excellent riding, total 1630 miles. No drama, just good sights and good roads, mostly new to me. -Bob Clem

Thanks for the neat pictures, we’re getting to see lots of places we’ve never been to. Enjoy your ride.😎

I enjoy seeing your journey through this website. It’s working well. I remember going through Idaho Sun Valley-Challis- Arco with Richard Carlson maybe 15-20 years ago. We were coming the opposite direction from Wyoming (Grand Tetons) on our way back to California (main events on that trip was Glacier & Yellowstone Nat’l Parks). I do like your images of your camp sites, tent backlit, etc.
But you’re doing this journey alone which must be challenging. Believe this or not there was a slight rain today in Concord from that tropical storm came up from Baja. Hope you have good weather. Will visit your website in a couple of days to see if anything new is posted. No pressure as I’m sure it takes a lot of luck to get downloads while you are roaming around the country.
Congratulations – you are well on your way.
